NPR News:Former First Lady Barbara Bush In Failing Health, Not Seeking Further Treatment

After a series of hospitalizations, former first lady Barbara Bush, 92, is focused on "comfort care," according to a statement released by the office of George H.W. Bush.

Bush is the wife of former President George H. W. Bush, and the mother of former President George W. Bush. She established the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy decades ago, promoting reading skills across America, particularly for young children.

She campaigned for her son Jeb during the 2016 election. She has been seen less frequently in public in recent months, although she continued to attend Houston Astros games. She sent an update to the Smith College alumni magazine for the Spring 2018 issue, telling the magazine she credited her long life to "great medical care and more operations than you would believe."

"I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" she joked.

"I am still old and still in love with the man I married 72 years ago," she said in her update.
