China lacks mature protection mechanisms

According to the data from the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO, the number of China's patent applications has surpassed the combined total of the US and Japan. In 2014, China had 4657 inventions filed for every trillion of GDP. But to become a true great patent power, the country has a long way to go.

"Although China is a big country when it comes to patent applications, we're still not a great patent power. Our intellectual property law has a short history. We still lack mechanisms and platforms in the implementation of intellectual property, and we are also short of experience in the management of intellectual property. I think these are all the challenges that we are facing before we grow in to a real patent super power," Shen Changyu from National Intellectual Property Office said.
