CCTV9英语新闻:Fighting continues in gov't controlled town of Krasny Liman

A fierce battle has erupted between Ukrainian and anti-government forces in the country's rebellious east. The fighting broke out early Thursday near the town of Krasny Liman, just east of the rebel stronghold of Sloviansk. The town has been under government control since early this month.

Sources said the battle could involve as many as 4-thousand anti-government fighters and armored vehicles. A spokesman for the Ukrainian forces in the east said that up to 200 rebels were killed and hundreds more wounded in the battle.

Rebel chief Igor Strelkov said the Ukrainian military advance would completely cut rebel supplies to Sloviansk, and he issued a desperate plea to Russia for military assistance. As pitched battles continued in eastern Ukraine, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen accused Russia of resuming a military buildup near the border with Ukraine.
