US OPEN
Patrick Snell: Hi there, welcome to World Sport, I'm Patrick Snell at the CNN center in Atlanta. Thank you so much for joining us. We are gonna start at the US Open in New York City where Justine Henin has added to her '03 success after a straight sets dismantling of Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova on super Saturday in the big apple. The world number one from Belgium now has seven Grand Slam titles to her name after winning her second major of 2007. This really didn't take too long. Now Henin in command of the first set up 4-1 at this point. And she would take the first set. Exuding so much confidence she was by far the better player, and she would take the opener. Six games to one. Now in the second Henin leading 2-1 came back down from low 40 in the fourth game here she hits a lovely drop shot volley win to get it back to deuce and she would go on to break the Russian player again. Match point, Henin would not be denied. Aggressive throughout. This is sublime touch to win. Look at that. A beautiful lob, she knew it was gonna go in and it's another Grand Slam title for Henin, 6-1, 6-3. Afterwards she spoke with CNN's Candy Reeds.
Candy Reeds: Here's the seven time Grand Slam Champion Justine Henin. Justine, congratulations, first of all. It's been a year of extreme highs and lows off the court, but throughout your tennis seems to have remained a constant. When you look back at this year, what do you think you will remember most?
Justine Henin: Well it's been tough, I can tell you I started the season, so it was so difficult for me with my personal issues and everything. And I just kept fighting. It was more important for me in my life at the time than playing tennis. But when I came back on the court it was just to be stronger and I really didn't know what to expect from the season. I thought it would be a season of transition and then finally it's maybe the best season of my career. And I'm just feeling so happy I have my family back in my life and I'm healthy and I do what I love so much being all day on the court and it's great that gives a lot of confidence and I couldn't think I could win two Grand Slams this year and I did it so that gives me a lot of satisfaction.
Candy Reeds: And you mention that much has been made with the reconciliation with your family how special will it be to celebrate a second Grand Slam title with them?
Justine Henin: It is and it's pretty sad with the jet lag and everything, the distance, they're not with me tonight to celebrate but I will do it with them at home and they send me text messages and they call me and they so happy, and it's great and it's maybe for my whole life. I have them behind me and there's a lot of love, a lot of support and it's just great. I'm finally in peace with myself so that's great news.
Candy Reeds: And you played a terrific tournament. You have of course a very tough route to the final, having to overcome both William Sisters and then extremely dominant in the final. Did you ever expect to have such a rewarding career?
Justine Henin: It was tough when I saw the draw, but I always go step by step match after match. You need to work hard every day. In another way I love challenges and it was a great one this one to beat Serena, Venus in the same tournament and then just 24 hours later being back on the court and try to play Kuznitzova and be at my best level. I was a bit tired but I did it. I've been so consistent, so it's maybe the best victory and Grand Slam in my career.
Candy Reeds: And you're still only 25. Two of your Grand Slams as you've said have come, and you have seven overall. How long do you think you can remain at this high level?
Justine Henin: It's tough to say. As soon as I keep being healthy, that's the key for me in the next few years and then take care of myself, of my body. Being so professional like I've been the last few years and give everything for tennis. I hope, 3, 4, 5 more years, who knows what's gonna happen. For me it's very hard to predict, but I wanna live this moment and enjoy every moment of my life because it's very short and very important to enjoy every moment of it.
Candy Reeds: Finally I love the story you tell about sitting with your mother, Françoise Rosière, your late mother, talking about maybe hopefully winning the French Open. You've now won four of those, one Australian, two US Opens, any promises or dreams left to fulfill in your tennis career?
Justine Henin: I always promised her I would finish studying so maybe I will keep studying as soon as I'm finished with my tennis. She was a teacher and school was so much important to her but in my life I had to make choices and I decided to stop school. It was tough because I promised her to finish so that would be maybe something I will do as soon as I'm done with my tennis records.
Candy Reeds: I'm sure she'd be very proud of you. Seven Grand Slams. Congratulations.
Justine Henin: Thank you very much.
Candy Reeds: Back to you now, in the studio.
