Talks on New UN Resolution on North Korea Underway

International envoys have not reached any agreement after another day of talks on possible UN sanctions and other measures in response to North Korea's latest nuclear test.

But the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Japan and South Korea say they would continue the talks.

Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin is the rotating Council President for May.

"I think we are continuing to have good discussions, exchanging views about the proper specifics of the response of the Security Council to recent developments. The first immediate political response, as you recall, was quick and it was there immediately. But now we need to take some time to reflect on what the specific elements of the future resolution need to be, that's it. We'll continue our work."

The Security Council has voiced "strong opposition to and condemnation of " North Korea's nuclear test.

North Korea has been under UN sanctions aimed at preventing the nation from nuclear and ballistic activity since its first atomic test in 2006.

Its rocket launch early in April prompted the Security Council to adopt a presidential statement condemning the launch and tightening sanctions.
